SXSW Online 2021 announced

Building a new future

Building a new future

South By Southwest (SXSW) is launching SXSW Online as part of its 2021 offerings. The digital experience will feature conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions. The dates for SXSW EDU Online are March 9 – March 11, 2021 and SXSW Online will take place March 16 – March 20, 2021. Furthermore SXSW is working with the City of Austin and public health authorities on plans for a physical event in 2021.

Entries for the 2021 digital experience will open on Tuesday, October 6 with PanelPicker proposals for SXSW and SXSW EDU. PanelPicker is the official SXSW user-generated session proposal platform for Conference programming. This easy, two-step online process was developed to encourage the SXSW community to enter proposals and have a significant voice in Conference programming. The SXSW community is then able to browse proposals, leave comments, and vote to help shape the programming.

SXSW EDU 2021 will be organized by eight tracks focused on timely topics in the rapidly evolving education landscape such as Community (Programs and projects focused on empowering and connecting communities in and out of the classroom by highlighting work organized by community spaces and groups including libraries, museums, makerspaces, community centers, after-school and summer programs, and more), Emerging Tech (Exploring development and implementation in educational technology including virtual teaching and learning solutions, universal design, artificial intelligence, XR, data privacy, coding, data interoperability, as well as issues surrounding equitable access to technology) Equity & Justice (Addressing work championing equity, justice, access, diversity and inclusion in education and beyond, including social and economic disparities, culturally responsive teaching, anti-racism practice, LGBTQ+ issues, and more to ensure equitable opportunities and outcomes for all), Global Impact, Media & Public Engagement, Policy & Civil Discourse, Practice & Pedagogy and Work Reimagined.

The 2021 Conference Formats will be: Converse (2-3 speakers / 45 min), a speaker-facilitated, open conversation that focuses on driving dialogue and connecting communities around a particular topic rather than offering a structured presentation, Feature (45 min), a groundbreaking conversation focusing on leading trends and topics across the education space, Keynote (45 min), a plenary session highlighting thought leadership that kicks off each day of SXSW EDU programming, Talk (1-4 speakers / 30 min), a focused, high-energy presentation centered on breakthroughs and insights and Work (2-3 speakers / 60 min), an instructional program with hands-on learning activities and specific takeaways.

“The challenge of building a new future is one that we’re excited to tackle. This has been such a year of change and we, like the entire world, are reshaping our perspective on how we connect,” said Roland Swenson, CEO and Co-Founder. “We’re pleased to be working on SXSW Online as part of our program for 2021, and regardless of platform, we will continue to bring together the brightest minds from creative industries worldwide.”
